Smock, smock, smock….Smocking

Vi ricordate quell’abitino  blu con piccoli fiorellini bianchi che adoravate indossare da piccole?Proprio quello con il bustino fatto di elastici? Quello si chiama punto smock.

Do you remember that little blue dress with small white flowers that you used to wear when you’re baby? Just that one with the elastic bust, so called smocking.

Finalmente dopo vari tentativi sono riuscita a realizzare il punto smock. Lo danno tutti come ultra semplice ma io ho buttato un bel po’ di km di elastico in vari tentativi.

Finally after several attempts I make “my” smocking. It says it’s pretty much simple, but  I’ve thrown away enough km of elastic in various attempts.

C’é chi posiziona l’elastico sul tessuto e poi lo copre con punto zig-zag : ho provato e deciso che questa tecnica non fa per me. Ho optato per metter il filo elastico nella bobina.  I primi tentativi erano con punto largo per poi arricciare; il risultato è stato cuciture saltate e filo elastico strappato. Ho risolto la cosa quando mi è balenato per la mente di mettere la tensione del filo a 6 e poi anche a 9, impostando un punto dritto largo.

There is who places the elastic on the fabric and then covers it with a zig-zag point: I’ve tried it as well and decided that this technique is not for me. I opted to put the elastic wire in the bobbin. The first attempts were with a straight stitch to gathering.  The result was broke seams and ripped elastic. I found the solution when it flashed in my mind to put the wire tension to 6 and then to 9, by setting up a straight stitch.

Una volta capito come realizzare questo agognato punto smock sono partita a “elasticizzare” qualsiasi scampolo mi capitasse a tiro.

Once understood how to make this coveted smocking, I started to “elasticize” any stash I could find.

Sempre alla ricerca di un modo per eliminare la lampo,  questo tipo di decorazione, che si allarga per infilare e poi si stringe per aderire, mi sembrava il massimo!

Always looking for a way to eliminate the zip, this decoration, which widens to tuck and then tightens to adhere, looked simply the best!

Da un rettangolo ottieni un top o una gonna, due cuciture in piu e puoi fare un pantalone harem o una bella blusa!

From a rectangle you can get a top or a skirt, two more seam and you can do a harem pants or a nice blouse!

Il video è lungo, bisogna armarsi di pazienza, ma alla fine il risultato è una blusa elegante quanto basta in pochissimo tempo! I passaggi alla fine sono quattro:

The video is pretty long, you need to be patient, but, at the end, the result is an enough elegant blouse in a very short time! There are four steps:

1. Piegare la stoffa in quattro e tagliare la scollatura e il giro manica ( qui conviene farsi due conti metro alla mano) /Bend the fabric in four and cut the neckline and the sleeve (here you should take the measures)
2.  Cucire spalle e fianchi / Sew shoulders and hips
3. Bordare tutto. Io ho scelto uno sbieco per il collo e passamaneria per maniche e orlo sotto / Edging everything. I chose a bias for the neck and sleeves and hem under trimmings
4. Segnare la circonferenza vita con il punto smock / Mark the waistline with smocking

Ero partita per farne un abito, ma l’effetto camicia da notte mi ha obbligato a tagliare a lunghezza blusa I was dressed to make a dress, but the nightgown effect forced me to cut a blouse length

• La tutina estiva vagamente anni ’50: l’ho tagliata partendo dai miei pantaloncini preferiti. Ho seguito la sagoma del pantaloncino davanti e dietro,  aggiungendo quanto mi serviva di busto. Ho cucito i due lati davanti e i due lati dietro (ne risulta una cucitura centrale). Ho aggiunto sulla parte sopra una fascia a punto smock ricavata da una striscia di tessuto di 1m alta 12cm. Infine ho deciso di sottolineare un minimo il punto vita con qualche linea di punto smock.                                                  The vaguely 50s summer jumpsuit: I cut it starting from my favorite shorts. I chase the shorts outline adding what needed for the top. I sewed the two front and backsides (it results a central seam). I stitched on the top a 1m smocking band, 12cm high. Lastly I decided to mark the waistline with some lines of smocking.

• Infine lui! Il mio coloratissimo abito in tessuto wax!! Il modello può essere una qualsiasi blusa a spalle scoperte con aggiunta una gonna svasata. Ho deciso di tagliare separatamente corpetto e gonna e di aggiungere un rettangolo 15x140cm per il girovita a punto smock . Questo mi permette di avere maggiore arricciatura.                                                                                        Finally  my colorful wax fabric dress!! The model can be any open-shoulders blouse with a flared skirt added. I decided to cut separately bodice and skirt and add a rectangle 15x140cm for the waistline to smocking. This gives me more gathering.

La sottogonna in tulle è il trucco per renderlo più vaporoso. The tulle underskirt is the trick to make it fluffy

Sono tutte realizzazioni facili, anche senza cartamodello! Un po’ di punto smock dove serve e…problema risolto!

They are all easy to make, even without a model pattern! A bit of smocking where needed and…problem solved!
